Telstat began
in Bayswater in the early 1980's, originally in the marine business,
servicing commercial shipping and was known then as Telstat Marine
Communications. Its initial core business was servicing electronic
equipment on board Oil Support vessels operating out of Barry
Beach Marine Terminal for the ESSO Bass Strait project.
Telstat contacted
to companies such as Esso, Tidewater Port Jackson, Australian
Offshore Services, Ray J McDermott, Raymonds International, Oceaneering
Shearwater Services, Atlas Offshore, Foramar and Southern Cross
Drilling.
In 1989 Telstat
made the decision to concentrate its core business on communications
and was awarded a CODAN prime dealership, then operating from
three locations- Bayswater, Toora in South Gippsland and Patterson
Lakes Whalers Cove Marina.
With this
expertise Telstat decided that it could now handle larger type
contracts, the first two being with BHP offshore in the Timer
Sea, both involving offshore oil facilities off the Western Australian
Coast with very complex communication and data systems. An additional
contract was secured to supply and fit all equipment in the facilities
construction stages in Korea.
Early in 1990
it was decided to close all other establishments and establish
a corporate headquarters in one place large enough to handle all
the business generated by Telstat, the place was at 52 Brunel
Road Seaford in a 8000 sq ft industrial factory, which is our
current headquarters.
Companies
like Australian Pacific Tours, AAT Kings Tours, Ansett Australia,
Crown Controls, and Quinces Coaches were all contract customers
of Telstat Australia-wide, with staff working in remote areas
such as Darwin, Alice Springs Cairns, Ayres Rock and Perth. The
business grew quickly into an Australia-wide operation within
10 years.
Telstat was
appointed prime Distributor for the core supplier CODAN where
Telstat appointed the CODAN agents in Victoria, Tasmania and Southern
NSW including Canberra and established a trading name of CODAN
COMMUNICATIONS ( Victoria) being a purely wholesale company servicing
the trade only with equipment and service support. This still
continues today.
Telstat has
a growing export market for this most wanted CODAN product and
have supplied equipment to Asia, Africa, Pakistan, PNG, and have
some large contracts in progress for other export markets.
Nera Worldcom
appointed Telstat the prime distributor for the famous NERA Satellite
product and factory trained our staff. This has resulted in Telstat
becoming the only Service Centre Authorised in Victoria for NERA.
Telstat has
supplied many overseas clients and Australian customers with this
product. More recently Telstat has secured a large order for NERA
products from the Local Country Fire Authority.
With an excellent
client base, Telstat continues to expand in new IT based products
for industry and commerce and is well placed with new products
from Core suppliers for the year 2000 and beyond.
