Globalstar uses what is known as a"bent pipe" or "mirror in the sky" approach to route calls.
When a call is made the signal is first beamed up to the nearest satellite and then reflected down to the gateway.
Then the signal is forwarded through an existing landline to the called party's phone.
All call processing and switching operations are carried out at ground level, rather than in the satellite itself. This improves reliability and provides easy access for maintenance and upgrading.
